Born on April 4, 1979 in Perth, Western Australia, his father was a racecar driver and mining engineer, and his mother was a French teacher. He was educated at Mary's Mount Primary School in Gooseberry Hill and Guildford Grammar School, where he first fell in love with acting after landing a role in a school play. Ledger began focusing on a career as an actor at age 17; he left school and traveled to Sydney with his best friend. He landed several minor television roles, including Australia’s famous Home and Away in 1997. His first role in film was in the teenage comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. He starred as a supporting actor in The Patriot in 2000, alongside Mel Gibson, and Monster’s Ball the same year. He soon landed lead role in the films A Knight’s Tale, The Four Feathers, Casanova, The Brothers Grimm and Lords of Dogtown. His most notable roles were in the films Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight, in which he played the Joker. He tragically overdosed on prescription pain medication on January 22, 2008.
