This gallery features photos of a young James Earl Jones, including his baby photo, pictures from his childhood, and several pictures from his 20’s and 30’s. Born on January 17, 1931 in Arkabutla, Mississippi, his father was actor, boxer and butler Robert Earl Jones, who sadly left the family shortly after he was born. His mother, Ruth, was a maid and teacher. James was primarily raised by his grandparents, who were farmers in Jackson, Michigan. He moved in with them when he was five years old, and the situation was so traumatic for him that he developed a stutter and wouldn’t speak most of the time. After several years, he moved to Brethren, Michigan, where a teacher helped him overcome his speech impediment after he encouraged him to find an outlet through poetry. He and his father reconciled after many years. Jones attended college at the University of Michigan with the intention of becoming a doctor. He found a passion for acting instead, and graduated in 1955. He is best known for his roles in The Great White Hope, Dr. Strangelove, Malcolm X, as well as his voice-over roles as Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King.
