He was born September 18, 1961 in Westwood, New Jersey, to Italian parents. His father won a Purple Heart in World War II, and encouraged speaking their native language while James was growing up. He attended Park Ridge High School, where he acted in theater productions, played basketball, was awarded “Class Flirt” in his senior yearbook, and was known for being popular among peers. He graduated from Rutgers in 1982 and worked as a bartender in Manhattan before starting his acting career. He began attending acting classes and enrolled at The Gately Poole Conservatory for two years. His first performance was in the Broadway production of On the Waterfront in 1992. His first movie role was in the 1993 movie True Romance. His most acclaimed role was in the HBO show The Sopranos, which aired from 1999 to 2007.
