Born on February 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, he was raised in a Jewish home. His father was a news director at the Pacifica Radio Station and his mother was an aspiring politician who ran for the United States Congress during the 1970s for the Peace and Freedom Party. Joseph’s maternal grandfather was a Hollywood film director from the 1940s to the 1970s; he directed the 1959 hit Pillow Talk, which starred Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Gordon-Levitt joined a musical theater group when he was four and starred in a production of The Wizard of Oz as the Scarecrow. He was spotted by an agent and began starring in commercials. His breakout role in film was in the 1994 movie Angels in the Outfield, opposite Danny Glover. He then landed a role in the popular television series 3rd Rock from the Sun in 1996. The show ran for six seasons.
