This gallery features a beautiful, young, Julie Andrews, including several photos from her childhood in the 1940s, as well as into her 20’s when she first entered the spotlight. Born on October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, Andrews was a product of an affair that her mother had with another man. She did not discover that the man she thought her father was truly wasn’t until 1950 when her mother finally told her the truth. Her mother and her husband divorced during World War II and her mother joined Ted Andrews in entertaining the troops through the Entertainments National Service Association; they married in 1939. Andrews has described her step-father as an abusive drunk. She retreated to singing as a form of relaxation during that time period. She made her debut in the United States on her 19th birthday in the 1954 Broadway production of The Boy Friend, followed by theater productions of My Fair Lady and Cinderella. She received awards for her performances and was launched into her film career, where she starred in popular movies The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and The Princess Diaries.
