Born March 17, 1951 in Springfield, Massachusetts, he is the son of an actor (father) and a dancer (mother). He graduated from Thousand Oaks High School in 1969. Russell began his career as a kid when he was cast for the pilot of an ABC western, Sugarfoot. His first film at age 11 was in the Elvis Presley movie It Happened at the World’s Fair. During the early 70s, he simultaneously became a movie star who had lead roles in Disney films The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and The Strongest Man in the World; however, he also had a minor league baseball career. He played for the California Angels, the Bend Rainbows, the Walla Walla Islanders and the El Paso Sun Kings. He was a leading Texas League in hitting but was injured in 1973, which led to his return to an acting career. His most prominent roles are: Overboard, Backdraft, Tombstone and Stargate. He has been in a relationship with Goldie Hawn since 1983.
