This gallery features 30 photos of young Mickey Rooney, many of which feature him as a baby, toddler and teenager; others feature him in his early 20’s in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Born on September 23, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, he was an only child whose actual name was Joseph Yule, Jr. His career began in his childhood when he landed smaller roles in films alongside some major stars like Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. He was paid $5 per day for his acting roles and had a newspaper route as a side job in order to raise enough money to enroll in the Hollywood Professional School, followed by the Hollywood High School. His first prominent role was in a 1939 film that was intended to be an MGM B-Movie. He was cast for the role of Andy Hardy in the movie A Family Affair, opposite Lionel Barrymore. Due to his excellent performance, the movie was a tremendous success and led to his role in 13 more Andy Hardy films. Rooney has appeared in over 300 films and was one of the last actors alive from the silent film era, until his death in April 2014.
