This gallery features pictures of young Nelson Mandela, including photos of him as a child, teenager, young man and into his early 30’s. Born on July 18, 1918 to a royal family, he studied law at Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand. He became involved in anti-colonial politics while living in Johannesburg. Mandela rose to fame during the ANC’s 1952 Defiance Campaign. Due to his outspoken disapproval of the government’s practices, he was arrested and unsuccessfully prosecuted at the Treason Trial from 1956 – 1961. He joined the South African Communist Party and co-founded what was originally a non-violent militant unit, Umkhonto we Sizwe. He led multiple campaigns against the government and was arrested again in 1962 and was convicted of conspiring to overthrow the state; he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. He served 27 years in prison and wasn’t granted release until 1990. He took his place in office on May 10, 1994 and served until June 14, 1999. He is known as the “Father of the Nation.” Mandela was diagnosed with a respiratory infection, and passed away on December 5th, 2013. He was 95 years old.
