Cleveland Brown (Character)

Cleveland Orenthal Brown, Sr. is a character from the animated television series Family Guy, and its spin-off series The Cleveland Show. He is voiced by Mike Henry. In the first seven seasons of Family Guy, Cleveland is a frequently recurring character. As one of Peter Griffin's neighbors and friends, Cleveland is also one of the few recurring African American characters on the show. He was conceived during the seventh-inning stretch of a Cleveland Indians game. His established profession was that of a deli owner. In the earliest seasons of Family Guy, Cleveland frequently appeared alongside his wife Loretta Brown, until their divorce was portrayed in the Family Guy season 4 episode "The Cleveland–Loretta Quagmire". The pilot episode of The Cleveland Show depicts Cleveland's farewell to the familiar characters and settings of Family Guy. The Cleveland Show establishes its setting of Stoolbend, Virginia as Cleveland's childhood home town, and introduces a new family and set of characters supporting Cleveland as lead.

Disney, for example, made headlines in 2009 with the movie&nbsp;The Princess and the Frog. It was the first animated Disney film to feature an African American princess. Of course, animated African American characters were popular long before Disney decided to create one. Children of the late &#39;60s and early &#39;70s perhaps remember watching a few of the best Black animated characters on Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.

&nbsp;Not all Black animated characters are for children, though. &nbsp;Why do TV producers feel the need to add token characters to a cast? Usually, the addition of a token minority can be attributed to one of two things (sometimes both): the producers want to appeal to a demographic that might not be attracted otherwise, or they want to defend themselves against claims that the show doesn&rsquo;t represent the diversity of real life. Either way, these token minority characters sometimes become audience favorites. For an example, think of James &quot;Toofer&quot; Spurlock from &ldquo;30 Rock.&rdquo;
