Lee Smith

Lee Arthur Smith (born December 4, 1957) is an American former baseball pitcher who played 18 years in Major League Baseball (MLB) for eight teams. Lee served mostly as a relief pitcher during his career. One of the dominant closers in baseball history, Smith held the major league record for career saves from 1993 until 2006, when San Diego Padres relief pitcher Trevor Hoffman passed his final total of 478.  Smith was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on December 9, 2018 as part of the Today's Game Era Committee vote.
A native of Jamestown in Bienville Parish in north Louisiana, Smith was scouted by Buck O'Neil and drafted by the Cubs in the 1975 MLB Draft. Smith was an intimidating figure on the pitcher's mound at 6 feet, 6 inches (1.98 m) and 265 pounds (120 kg) with a 95-mile per hour (150 km/h) fastball. In 1991, Smith set a National League (NL) record with 47 saves for the St. Louis Cardinals, and was runner-up for the league's Cy Young Award; it was the second of three times he led the NL in saves, and he later led the American League (AL) once while with the Baltimore Orioles in 1994. He also set the major league career record for games finished (802), and his 1,022 career games pitched were the third-most in history when he retired; he still holds the team records for career saves for the Cubs (180), and he also held the Cardinals record (160) until 2006.
After the end of his major league career, Smith spent time working as a pitching instructor at the minor-league level with the San Francisco Giants. He then served as the pitching coach for the South Africa national baseball team in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and 2009 World Baseball Classic. Smith is a minor-league roving pitching instructor for the Giants.

If they don&#39;t make the Hall because of the writers, then the Veterans Committee can induct the players later on.

One of the best Chicago Cubs in history is shortstop Ernie Banks. The first Black player in Cubs history, Banks is revered by Cubs fans despite the two-time MVP never played in a postseason game. There&#39;s a statue of Banks outside of Wrigley Field honoring his contributions on and off the field.&nbsp;

Many of the Cub players you&#39;ll see on this list are from the franchise&#39;s early years. Hack Wilson holds one of baseball&#39;s greatest records: RBIs in a single season. In 1930, Wilson drove in a mindboggling 191 runs along with bashing 56 home runs. Though Sammy Sosa later broke his record for home runs, Wilson&#39;s accomplishments land him on this list of the Greatest Chicago Cubs of All Time.

Before moving to Washington after the 2004 season, the Montreal Expos were known as one of the most star-crossed franchises in baseball history. Despite the team&#39;s amazing talent and some of the best players ever, the Expos were never able to win a championship. The Expos of the early &#39;80s featured two of the top players in Expos/Washington Nationals history in Gary Carter and Andre Dawson. Both of these players are in the Baseball Hall of Fame and are the only players to wear Expos caps on their Hall of Fame plaques. The 1994 Expos team was broken up due to the player&#39;s strike and economics. At the time of the strike, the Expos had the best record in baseball and appeared to be on a collision course with the New York Yankees or Chicago White Sox in that year&#39;s World Series. That team featured some of the best players in team history including Pedro Martinez, Larry Walker, Marquis Grissom, John Wetteland and Moises Alou. After the strike, the team never recovered and moved to Washington and became the Nationals.

The Nationals early years in Washington D.C. were not successful. The team finished in the National League East&#39;s basement from 2005 through 2010 before the Nationals&#39; young talent finally flourished. The franchise&#39;s mainstay has been third baseman Ryan Zimmerman. At this early stage in Nationals history, Zimmerman is considered one of the best players to play in Washington D.C. The Nationals have their hopes pinned to youngsters Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, both of whom were a part of the team&#39;s first National League East Division title in 2012, the franchise&#39;s first since 1981 in Montreal.
