A few things to keep in mind: (1) Songwriting teams are acceptable if they truly worked together (for example, Elton John writing music to Bernie Taupin&#39;s lyrics). When possible, as in the case of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, separate them and focus on individual songwriting. (2) LIVING songwriters. Living. (3) I think the ratio of &quot;great songs&quot; to &quot;not good songs&quot; is important to consider. Dead rock stars, ranked in order of how much potential great music was lost to this world by their untimely passing.&nbsp;The key criteria for this list is to guess &quot;how much greatness they left behind&quot; - in other words, it would be very difficult to justify, for example, Syd Barrett on this list, because although he is a <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/rockstar-graves/alby-thompson" target="_blank">dead rockstar</a>, he died long after he had stopped making music at all. Similarly, although Elvis Presley died an untimely early death, if you were equally a fan of Kurt Cobain and Elvis Presley, you would only rank them equally if you thought Elvis&#39;s post-77 output would equal Cobain&#39;s post-&#39;94 output (although you might still keep Elvis somewhere on your list - he was still playing live and could certainly have cleaned up and made a comeback). Recently-deceased musicians, such as Avicii, are eligible for inclusion as well as those who passed years ago.

To keep the spirit of this list, your ranking should reflect a combination of a) musical talent (as a performer, songwriter, and recording artist) and b) how much of that talent you think the world missed, based on how early in their career the artist was taken from us, and what you think their output would have been had they lived a full life. Please note that this list is focused on ROCK artists, so while you aren&#39;t going to be prohibited from adding Hank Williams or Billie Holiday, most would argue that country, jazz, and even blues greats aren&#39;t rock musicians (people have been including soul and hip-hop, however). Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Don McLean all have at least one influence in common: Buddy Holly. As a young man, McLean was so affected by <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-buddy-holly-songs/voteable" target="_blank">Holly</a>, he later wrote &quot;American Pie&quot; about what happened on the day the music died; his poetic label for Holly&#39;s tragic demise. The day the song refers to was February 3, 1959,&nbsp;when rising music stars Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson, AKA The Big Bopper, perished when their private airplane impacted into a snowy field. All three were on the verge of success and were touring the upper Midwest on the Winter Dance Party tour when they made the fateful decision to skip a bus ride to their next destination and take a plane instead.

Holly was the biggest name on the tour, and sales of his records increased posthumously. In addition to influencing the way rock &#39;n&#39;&nbsp;roll is performed by using one bass, one drum, and two guitars, Holly&#39;s embrace of his everyday-guy looks and <a href="https://historydaily.org/buddy-hollys-glasses-found-21-years-after-his-death" target="_blank">thick glasses</a> was appealing to fans across the country. Valens and Richardson each created a couple famous hits still featured in oldies collections, and could very well have had long, successful careers if they survived. Through &quot;La Bamba,&quot; Valens is credited with helping to start Chicano rock, and who knows where Richardson&#39;s energetic stage presence may have taken him.

Like many <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/99-famous-people-who-died-young/james707" target="_blank">popular people</a> who passed while still young, the three musicians&#39; final moments are riddled with conspiracies, and legends surrounding the event wonder who gave up their seat on the plane the day the music died, as well as who did not get on the plane the day the music died. The most undeserving members of the Rock Hall of Fame are all respectable and successful musicians and bands but quite simply, not at the level of other <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-inductees/rockboy" target="_blank">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees</a>. These bands and singers are far from the level of legends like <a href="http://www.ranker.com/review/led-zeppelin/1427277" target="_blank">Led Zeppelin</a>, The Beatles, Queen and Elvis Presley but somehow found their way into the Rock Hall regardless.

While all of these least deserving Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members were kind of a big deal back in their day, it&#39;s highly likely that most normal people would have never heard of these folks. Ask any 25-year-old if they&#39;ve ever heard of Darlene Love, Bobby Bland or Jimmy Cliff. See if they can tell you who Gene Vincent, Jimmy Reed or The Moonglows are. No one is doubting any of the talent or success of these musicians (or saying that they are the worst people to ever make music) but when other (better) singers and bands have been snubbed for induction, it&#39;s valid to examine the interesting selections.
